1. Protect Your Heart

So far, hemp's proposed effects on the heart are primarily theoretical.

Animal studies have suggested that hemp seed oil may reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack.8 This hasn't been proved in human studies, though.

Hemp seeds also contain arginine, an amino acid that may offer benefits for blood pressure to help protect the heart.9 However, more research on this is necessary.

One clinical trial showed that hemp seed plus physical activity improved the lipid profile of young sedentary (non-active) males, which might benefit the heart.10

Another study in healthy adults who were overweight showed that hemp oil increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good") cholesterol.11

2. Treat Skin Disorders

Hemp oil is often used as a hair conditioner or skin moisturizer.

Some studies found that hemp seed oil may improve dry, itchy skin and symptoms of eczema, a common skin condition. It may reduce the need for prescription medication when used for eczema symptoms.12 However, more research is needed.

3. Help With Constipation

Because of its high fiber content, hemp has traditionally been used as an antidote to constipation. There's little evidence of this benefit, however.

A review of clinical trials concluded that hemp is effective in treating functional constipation but noted that more data is necessary because all of the included studies were conducted in Asian populations.13

4. Curb Hunger

With 10 grams of protein per serving and nine essential amino acids, some people use hemp as a way to keep them feeling full for longer.14 Anecdotal evidence suggests it may help with weight loss because it leaves people who consume it feeling full for longer. Because it takes the body longer to break down a complete protein like hemp, it can help sustain a feeling of satisfaction for longer.

Hemp is also a good source of protein for those with vegetarian diets, who might be looking for protein in alternative areas.

5. Promote Healthy Hair

There is evidence that omega-3 and omega-6 supplements, which are both found in hemp, can help with hair loss and hair thickness. One study examined the hair growth of 120 female participants over a six-month period and found that omega-3 and 6 supplements improved hair density and improved hair loss.15
